On Sunday we promised the kids we'd take them to the McDonalds PlayPlace because the weather was too hot and miserable to play outside. But before going we had to clean the house. Every weekend we clean the house as a team. I make the list of what needs to be done then we all tackle it, even The Little Kids help. One advantage of having a smaller house and way less stuff to manage is that we can get the list done in under an hour.
Yesterday, Jed was finishing the vacuuming and I had just finished washing the dishes when disaster struck. I pulled the plug to drain the dirty dish water. You ever have something happen to you and for about 2 seconds while it's happening you aren't sure what's going on? Or maybe your brain knows what's going on but it doesn't want to admit it?
Me: Jed! Jed!
Jed: (From the other room) What?!
Me: Come here, hurry! Somethings happening!!
Jed: What's happening?
Me: I don't know!!
But I knew. My brain knew too, it just wanted to stay in denial for another moment. Water was cascading over my feet. Water was spraying out the bottom of the cupboard like an attraction at a water park. But this was my kitchen, not a water park. After the water slowed to a drip we opened the cupboard to discover the drain pipe was disconnected. Dirty dish water flooded the cupboard soaking all its contents. The entire kitchen floor was covered with water. Now, what really pissed me off was that I just, and I mean just finished steam mopping the floor. Dirty water all over my CLEAN floor*. Installing a dishwasher just found it's way to the top of my to-do list.
This disaster didn't ruin the fun we had planned. We quickly team worked cleaning up the mess with every towel in the house then headed off to the PlayPlace.
They went down the slide as a 4 person train about 1 billion times. Wore them out good for nap time.
Today, after dropping The Boys off at their first day of summer school, I took my sidekicks to Home Depot.
Thanks to YouTube this is what I was getting:
A 1 1/2" washer cost 93 cents. That's all it took to fix the sink. Whoever installed the sink didn't have a washer on the pipe which is why after enough use it popped off. Jed and I figure the sink has seen more use over the past month than it has in the previous 6 months. I also picked up paint samples for Paxton's dresser. Green is his favorite color. I'm hoping to tackle that project this week.
Well, I'm off to do 1 million loads of laundry. If a leak should spring and you don't hear from me, send a boat.
*See, Martha, this is why I don't feel guilty when I don't clean the floor. It always gets instantly dirty again. (Martha had sent me a text a long while back saying something about feeling guilty for not mopping her floors more often. The guilt was just starting to get to me too when Hamilton flung a full bowl of ravioli across the floor. As I was down on my hands and knees cleaning up the mess all my dirty floor guilt instantly disappeared.)
